Gosh, it's been so long since I last drew a character from 'Inuyasha'. It was the main thing I drew throughout most of middle school and beginning high school too. xD
But this was for my summer Japanese Civilization course (recently finished); my professor said that for one of our nine assignments to turn in, we could try our hand at drawing anime. So I asked him if he had any preference of character, or anime, etc and he suggested something Shinto-related (since the Shinto religion is native to Japan).
I'm 90% sure Kikyo's a Shinto priestess so I drew her. And I added a torii gate in the background to establish even more Shintoism to the pic.
Fun fact: Did you know 'torii' literally means 'bird perch'? I thought it was fun to have birds actually perching on the gate in this pic (and hopefully my professor liked my sense of wit/humor).
The torii gate is significant because it is said that a bird beckoned the Sun Goddess, Amaterasu, out from her cave where she went into hiding (after being embarrassed by her mischievous brother, Susano-wo's, actions). And now, these 'torii', or 'bird perches' mark off the area of a nearby Shinto shrine.
I had originally wanted to draw Amaterasu, from the video-game Okami, for this assignment, but since this assignment was about drawing anime I thought the calligraphy-esque art style of the game might not fit the assignment. But I have already made a rough draft for the Okami piece which I'm hoping to color and put up later. So, to all you Okami fans, look out for that. ;]
Hope you guys enjoy!
